Supersized Audience for Presidential Debate

trumphillaryThe first of three presidential debates between candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump was expected to set a new record for audience size as the two “least popular” candidates in decades took the stage tonight. The previous record goes back to 1980 and the Reagan/Carter debate.

With this large of an audience, brands see this as an advertising opportunity. While the debate itself is aired without advertising, some of the ad spending will go to social media where hashtags are used to connect with customers. According to digiday.com,

Tecate and agency Saatchi New York are airing a Trump-mocking ad called #TecateBeerWall. Unlike the barrier proposed by the Republican nominee, Tecate’s wall will be 3 feet tall and used as a meeting point for people from both sides of the border to have a drink on. It will air Monday night on Fox, Univision and Telemundo.

The guidelines for the debate are set by the Commission on Presidential Debates, a non-partisan, non-profit organization that sets the rules and chooses the moderators. One decision that has drawn some attention is that the moderators this year will not serve as on-the-fly fact-checkers. So if/when either candidate says something that is dubious, it will be up to the other candidate, journalists, and later, the TV commentators, to try to set the record straight. Of course you can always turn to Twitter where the American audience will be fact-checking every statement in real-time.

And speaking of social media, you don’t even need a TV to watch the debates. Plenty of websites, including Facebook, are live streaming the events.

  1. Like stated by others the debate is literally turning into a metaphoric pissing contest both canadites care more about getting the edge on the other. and the media is making it more of a frenzy by bringing in the past on the others. This debate is unlike any of the years before making it difficult for people to chose a canadite that they really like and trust

Overall, I believe this year has caused great havoc between these two candidates and the media is provoking its audience to pick a party.

  3. I’m scared of how our future is going to become in the next two year because of Trump and Clinton. They seem to act like children bickering back and forth during the debate. How is the country going to trust someone to run us, if they are not even able to stop talking for a moment to let someone else talk.

  4. I think that it’s a bit frightening that a presidential campaign is being treated like a super bowl game by having big companies broadcast humorous commercials about the candidates in between. However, it’s understanding because the nation is entertained by the candidates and the way they make fools of themselves by exchanging their provoking banter so it draws the viewers in.

  5. I think the debate was very comical the way Donald and Hillary responded to the questions and one another it was very unprofessional for a debate to where I found it more comical then I did influential

  6. I think this debate was very unprofessional for debating the country’s issues, especially when these two are competing to be the leader of this country. I admit it was entertaining but neither played a part in convincing me to lean to one side or another.

  7. In this debate, both candidate (Trump and Clinton), both made the debate entertaining but yet wasn’t much of an actual intelligent debate, by which making fun of each other and jumping in front of each other statements and such, much good for a show, but never had a good effect on what the country needs to handle as a whole. By both Trump and Clinton making good starting points at the beginning of the debate and towards the middle and ending of the debate, just left more questions than answered. Just left more of society making more memes than anything.

  8. In the debate between Trump and Clinton, it was very uneducated towards both sides of Republican and Democratic. They were both putting up good arguments but they were also not being professional towards the audience. Many americans tuned into this debate and a lot left very unsatisfying.

  9. The debate was extremely unsatisfying because neither were actually putting up good arguments but had some facts about certain ideas in the era we are in struggling with in society. Also many people in americas tuned into the debate and was highly interested in what the two candidates had to say.
