If you&#8217;re not already familiar with the term, Esports refers to organized video gaming competitions. You can find plenty of background information on the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Esports wikipedia page (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Esports\" target=\"_blank\">Esports wikipedia page<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, how big of a thing is Esports? Well, you know something has entered popular consciousness when SNL and Chance the Rapper poke fun at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"E-Sports Reporter - SNL\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DlnwZzK2Ngo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Esports exists on various levels from amateur to college to pro. Professional Esports players earn on average $300,000\/year, not too bad for playing video games, but far less than the <a href=\"https:\/\/erikrood.com\/Posts\/salary_dist_sports.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"average salaries (opens in a new tab)\">average salaries<\/a> for major league sports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among colleges and universities in the region, Colorado College in Colorado Springs has a well-established program. Last spring they won first place at the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"SCAC Esports Showdown (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coloradocollege.edu\/other\/esports\/scac\/\" target=\"_blank\">SCAC Esports Showdown<\/a> where they competed in Overwatch, League of Legends, Smash Bros Ultimate, and Fortnite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year the Summer Olympic Games will be held in Tokyo, Japan, and while Esports will not be an official game of the 2020 Olympics, it will be featured in the days preceding the official games. According to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"engadget (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019\/09\/11\/intel-is-hosting-an-olympics-sanctioned-esports-tournament-in-20\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>engadget<\/em><\/a>, &#8220;Players will compete in\u00a0<em>Street Fighter V\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Rocket League\u00a0<\/em>for a price of $250,000 for each game.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And for those who like to watch, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"VENN (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.venn.tv\/\" target=\"_blank\">VENN<\/a> is launching this year and promises to be a new 24\/7 post-cable network aimed at gaming, esports and entertainment audiences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe my next post should explore the idea of a &#8220;post-cable network.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just in case you hadn&#8217;t heard, Esports has arrived.
