What was the big media story this summer?

I’m curious…what did YOU think was the big media story this summer? By “big” I mean, important to you. By “media story” I mean, news event or trend about the media industry. For example you might think the big story was about a new technology, e.g. the iPhone 4 or iPad, or you might think the big story was political, e.g. the release of thousands of classified pentagon documents on Wikileaks. Or perhaps the big media news for you was about celebrities or the entertainment industry, e.g. the success of the Twilight Saga. So here’s your chance to weigh in and let us know what you think the big story was from the summer of 2010. Oh and BTW, you may not respond with one of the examples provided above.

  2. I believe the big story of the summer involved the oil spill in the gulf and what plans of action are being made to help resolve the conflict. The number of ocean life animals that died in the oil spill when shown to the public appealed to the emotional side of the community. I’m not sure exaclty what brand of dish soap it was, maybe Dawn. But they did a commercial advertising their soap brand by cleaning off the animals affected by the oil spill. The target was to get their image brand to appeal to the public in a good light and hopefully increase the sales of their product through this good deed/action.

  3. The big story this summer, in my opinion, is the tiger woods sex scandal. It seemed as if every source of the media was reporting about the couple and tigers personal issues with infidelity. The story gained so much publicity that an app called “tiger text” was created. Apparently the app allows you to send a text and designate a certain amount of time that the text stays in existance before it erases itself.

  4. With 24hr live feeds of the bleeding pipe line, it was hard to miss. Plus it made good news. We had a clear focus on who to blame. B.P. and clueless Tony were easy to hate. Americans havent been that mad at the Brittish since the Spice Girls. Well, there are those movies that cast Brittish actors as Nazis. I guess any Europen accent will do, but I stray. It was by far the most important story in the U.S.

Then came King James. Just when we thought people care about issues that matter, a basketball player that kept falling short of expectations found a way to steal the spot light. Dont get me wrong James is good, but the “Deception” was a joke. Opps, I mean “Decision”. He took 2 months of news time to announce a decision he most likely made years ago while playing in the Olympics. Ending with an hour special thats end result was buring the bridge to his home town and making the Yankees look lovable. Im not made he and Wade formed the new most hated team in sports. Honestly, Im impressed at how he made us all care so much, wait, and want as if he was about to uncover the cure for cancer. Well done King James.

  5. To try this again… With so many noteable news stories this summer, a few stood out. You had Tiger the love lion, Arizon shouting “show me the green card”, the up and down economy, and even the barefoot bandit (that was more FOX News filler, but still was a daily news story. As all of these were in escapable they were far from the top story.

In my view…it is a blog, so im guessing you are asking for our view…The top story was a tie.

First the Gulf Oil Spill! Still puts a bad taste in your mouth. The oil spill story was pumped into our homes

  6. I consider one of the biggest media stories of the summer to be the oil spill. Every single day I turned on the television there was some big update about the oil spill and how it was affecting wildlife and resident life.

  7. The big media story that I heard this summer that was important to me was probably the story on the oil spill. The oil spill not only was affecting wildlife but more importantly it was affecting everyone in the United States. Everyone uses oil so when oil goes up it affects us and by having that huge of an oil spill it was not only causing damage to out planet, wildlife, but also ourselves.

  8. In my opinion, the biggest story in the news this summer was the passing of the new medical healthcare reform. Not only was this such a huge change to the way we go about taking care of healthcare, it also showed the power of the democratic majority. It showed the rest of the world that for at least the time being, the government is going to try to do what they think is best for us rather than listen to the opinions of the Americans that voted them into office

  9. One of the big media stories that has surfaced towards the end of the summer is the Verizon/Google partnership. If these two team up Google would be giving preferential treatment to Verizon users for certain internet content. This is a pretty big deal for not only Verizon users but net users in general because it deals with the already controversial issue of net neutrality.

  10. Besides the BP oil spill in the Gulf Coast, which illuminated the deficiencies of the oil industry, I would have to say a large media story over the summer would be the boom of media attention on newly discovered Justin Beiber. With so much media attention, Justin’s fame was accentuated and sensationalized. Regarding the context of Justin Beiber’s rise to fame (through You-Tube, a form of mass media) it is a bit humorous to stipulate if Justin is worth the attention, which he may and may not. However, the media has changed life so much that musicians no longer have to go through long processes to promote their music–they can now just use You-Tube to become famous. However, it is kind of perturbing that the sensationalization of persons through the media is happening so quickly and so frequently.

  11. It is my belief that this summer’s biggest media story was the oil spill off the Gulf coast. The media put all their time and effort into blaming British Petroleum, when they should have been looking at what the real problem was; the millions of thousands of aquatic life that was and still is being effected by the spill. It is in my opinion that the blame for the spill doesn’t only fall onto BP, but on all of us. We let this happen. Human beings feel like they can do whatever they want to the Earth, like there’s infinite recourses and that the other parts on Earth can take care of themselves. 700, 800, years age, that might have been the case. However; ever since the industrial revolution and even just the millennium of technology that has changed. We have crippled the Earths natural protection for us with all of our chemicals in the air and made the independent animals and plants, dependent on us. We are fighting a losing battle

  12. I understand that different people have different perceptions of what big media stories are out there today. However, it shocks me that people did not see one particular piece as importantly as others. The district 60 and 70 of Pueblo, Colorado cut the budgets for public schooling throughout the city. Budget cuts for schools are not only occurring in Pueblo but throughout the country as well, especially California. It may not seem like that big of a deal to others because it is something that is not surprising. But shouldn’t it be? Shouldn’t it be something to fuss about? With the new budget cuts, there is even less money than the bare average for students. This is why our country has fallen in academics in recent years. We’ve fallen behind at least 20 countries in a number of areas, and it is all because we cannot handle our educational system properly. It may also be the reason why some people may find entertainment news as important as global news. Without the education we need, we are influenced to think by what we see, and all we see is glitter and gold in the entertainment world.

  13. Well in my opinion the biggest media story of the summer was the oil spill. The oil spill was on the news live spilling oil in to the ocean for like two months. Then you had BP being blamed and experts on every little thing just so they can get there 3 minutes of tv air time to talk good or bad about BP.

  14. THE BIG MEDIA STORY in the my personal opinion was the Tiger Woods affair. Everyone had an opinion on the subject.

  15. I think that the biggest news story of the summer is of course the oil spill. Whenever you would watch the news it would always be being shown and many news broadcast stations would give updates. There are many people that are trying to fix the leakage, but it is a hard task to accomplish. There are a lot of animals being affected by the oil spill and I hope we get everything fixed as soon as possible.

  16. I think the oil spill was by far the biggest media story of this summer. The news was reporting on it on the daily and the spill had devestating effects on the surrounding environment. The media covered every single aspect of the oil spill which made it the biggest story this summer.

  17. In my opinion i think the oil speal was a very big media story this summer. It was all over the news, showing how many gallons was leaking in to the gulf of mexico….there were many people and organizations that were trying to come up with a solution to trying to get it all cleaned up…

  18. I think a pretty big story this summer was the big deal that people made about Lebron James’ decision. Just the fact that they dedication so much time on his interview instead of just letting him tell us what he wanted to do was a bit reduculous. A lot of people watched the desicion, many were annoyed by the suspense. More people were angry when he announced that he was leaving to Miami. It was funny that they made such a big deal about it.

  19. In my opinion, “The decision” was the biggest media story of the summer. LeBron James was all over the TV and Radio when he was choosing his home for the 2010-2011 NBA season. Even the President gave his opinion on where LeBron should go. Hands down “The Decision” was the biggest media story of the summer.

  20. I thought the big media story of the summer was the rising success of female rapper Nicki Minaj. Not only is she thriving in a predominantly male ran industry, she’s also competing with these same men and reaching high ranks on the Billboard top 100 Hip Hop. She has done collaborations with many artists, including iron clad barred Lil’ Wayne. Sources say she is to be the next best thing in this generation of hip hop, and she’s become a new sensation that many people who enjoy this genre of music have come to love and appreciate.

  21. Like many of my peers, I feel that the biggest news story of the summer was the oil spill in the gulf. Not only did the media cover this event for such an extensive time, but the occurance affected many people across the nation. The spill was obviously detrimental to businesses along the coast and the company BP, but it will also play a future role in how American citizens view offshore oil drilling. In my opinion, an incident such as this that has the potential to impact the nation on various levels should be important to everyone.

  22. I found one of the newest hate crimes to be a big summer media story. A taxi cab driver was stabbed in the throat arms and hand by a white American male after finding out that he was a muslim. That just goes to show you how ridiculous some people can be just because a person isnt from the same country or doesnt share the same beliefs. It makes me sick to think how cruel ppl can be!

  23. I think that the oil spill was the biggest story thi summer. I mean, every news channel displayed the oil coming out of the bottom of the ocean. There was a lot of damage done and without the coverage from the news, no one would realize what a big tradgedy it really was.

  24. i think the big story of the summer for me was in the sports world! i think it was the retirement of brett farve. although it took a lot of convincing but he will return for a 20th season. I think this is a huge story because he has set records in the nfl such as number of games started in a row and pass yards and touchdowns, but he has also set the most interception record. but he is returning and the vikings are in contention for a world title

  25. i think the biggest stories of the summer would have to be BP and the oil spill, the world cup, lebron james leaving cleveland for miami, and the passing of the financial overhaul in congress.

  26. One big media story over the summer was when Arizona’s governer signed an immigration law that would give police the right to stop anyone that “resembles” an illegal alien, and force them to provide “an alien registration document” (a greencard, passport, or Arizona driver’s license) to proove that they are indeed a citizen. While this law may have been created with good intentions, it has certainly caused a great deal of controversy, as it is encouraging “racial profiling” in the United States. This was a pretty big story over the summer, and I think the controversy surrounding it will continue to grow if nothing is done about it.

  27. I think one of the big media stories was the stabbing of a pregnant Egyptian woman, Marwa al-Sherbini, 32, in a German courtroom. She was stabbed as a witness to the Dresden trial by a man who accused her of being a terrorist.

  28. I believe the big media story this summer had to be the Black slimy goo that was spilled in the waters of the Golf coast. Or better known as the Oil Spill!

  29. This summer the media story that caught my eye was about the new iPhone 4. Much like the movies showing the future technology of talking to the other person through a video the iPhone 4 is the first phone to have video chat. When these movies were created it was not known that technology like the iPhone would be invented putting the movie in a futuristic perspective but is now our reality. Truly technology today still surprises me and i look forward to what society will come up with next.

  30. In my opinion the biggest story of the summer was the oil spill along the Gulf Coast caused by BP. Not only was this event horrificialy damiging to the enviroment, it has been crippling to our economy. Many jobs have been lost as boats were not allowed out in the Gulf. The effects of such a major spill are far reaching into the future as for many years we will participate in cleaning the oil out of the water. Much of the surrounding wildlife has been destroyed and one can ask with hurricane season approaching how the oil on top of all that water will affect there strength. There are still many questions to this story and it is my belief that coverage of the event will last much longer then just this summer and possibly into next year.

  31. i think the biggest media story of this year so far was the NBA trade Lebron James. The media covered all aspects of “The Decision” and i was one of the leading topics in sportss for weeks!

  32. From living in New York my whole life up until I moved out to Colorado for college I would have to choose the recent Mosque Controversy that is going on in New York City right now. The The islamic people want to build a mosque at ground zero and they want the contruction to start on September 11th, 2010. I think this is terrible and unjust. My father was a firefighter in New York City for the past 18 years and he was the second to arrive at ground zero when the towers were hit. He luckily survived and returned home two days after. I think by placing a mosque where the new freedom towers memorial is going to be dishonors all the lives that were lost on September. 11th, 1991. I would definitely not support this construction. I will be curious to see what happens as the deadline draws closer.

  34. Being a sportsfan I found a big story of the summer to be the trade of the NBA’s most dominant star, Lebron James. Making sports media headlines. The trade in July was found to be the most controversial moment in the NBA since Gilbert Arenas of the Wizards was caught with guns in his locker. Then after being traded, Lebron made a mockery of the NBA by showboating himself with his new team live on ESPN.

  35. I believe the big media story this summer could be the possible fact that the iphone could now be sold to other companys such as verizon wireless and t-mobile. Once the iphone gets sold to all these other phone companys, this particular phone will start to become more popular to people than any other phone would be.

  36. I believe that the biggest media story over this past summer is the Kyron Horman Investigation case. Kyron Horman is a 7 year old boy that went missing in Oregon after school one day, and has not been seen since. More than two months have now passed. Kyron’s disappearance has been very complex, as a suspect in the case of missing Kyron is his own step-mother, Terri Horman. Due to the Horman family’s personal issues that have been so critical in the investigation of Kyron’s disappearance, the media has been following this case very attentively through radio, print, Internet, and television newscasts.

  37. In my opinion, the big story of the summer was the release of rapper T.I. (Clifford Harris Jr.) from prison. He was held in numerous correctional facilities and faced with various fines and restrictios based on gun charges. This is big to me because not only is he fine but he is one of my favorite rappers. The only reason he attempted to buy guns in the first place was to protect his family from the people who had already murdered his best friend in a shooting and had already threatened the lives of him and his family. He was only trying to defend his family in the best way that he could at that time. Although he could have handled things differently, I feel like his reasoning was legit. I would also protect my loved ones to the best of my abilities if anyone threatened to harm their safety.

  38. In my opinion the Fifa World Cup 2010 which took place in South africa had millions of viewers attention. Many people have been waiting for this for four years & even non soccer players enjoyed a intense match up. whether it was the cup’s champions, Spain or our home country USA more people were watching the world cup then any other channel. There was talk about who played who & who & who scored what & which player was out for the game due to a red car. there was talk all around the world about this cup.

  39. I think the big media story this summer was…Well I really don’t know of many because I don’t watch the news too much. But one that I can recall is the robery at 1st bank in Aurora Co. The most exciting part was that my sisters and mother were there while it was happening. It’s crazy that he just walked by all security, all the staff, and all the costumers without anyone noticing. That was big because you have to be pretty crafty to secretly rob a bank in the middle of the day.

  40. A story in which I found to be quite intriguing and alarming, was the crisis that occurred with Greece in May of 2010. Greece had spent far more money than they should have, and their deficits were reaching remarkable levels. They were given the date of May 7, 2010 to pay off all of their debts, but sure enough, they failed to do so. To me, this was something that I found quite frightening because I saw what could happen to America some day in the future. Where are we going to turn if other nations want to start collecting what we owe them? It only solidified the importance of clearing the National Deficit. Right now, it seems as though our nations deficit is at the bottom of our priority list. I just hope that this media announcement opened up the eyes of many other Americans to see that we need to start making changed within our government to make our priorities straight.

  41. A big media story over this years summer for me was the Iphone 4, cause I like Iphones and the Iphone 4 they were talkin about it like it was big. And you had to get one cause it had so much features in one little phone that was light wight and had everything you needed whith just a press of a button on your phone screen.

  42. I believe Tiger Woods and his divorce with Elin Nordegren was a very popular media story this summer. After releasing the truth about Tiger’s misbehavior, the media continuously reported the stories on television, radio, internet, magazines etc. It took affect on a lot of Tiger’s fans and changed the way many people viewed Tiger Woods.

  44. In my opinion the big media story of this summer was the oil spill in the gulf. In my opinion, there was not enough done to stop the oil spill more quickly. The drastic and depressing damage that was done covered the news, and informed everyone, even those who do not follow the media, or newscasting at all.

  45. I know that this wont be a shocker, but the biggest media story of the summer was definitely the oil spill in the gulf… It was something that could have been avoided, it has affected many people and wildlife, not to mention businesses all over the gulf region.

  46. One of the biggest, in terms of controversial, news stories of the summer has been the debate over the Ground Zero Mosque. It’s been hotly discussed so much, and to such extensive lengths via “The Daily Show,” etc., that it has sparked some nation-wide thoughts about tolerance and unity. For those who are unaware, to summarize, Muslim church members wanted to build a center of worship within two blocks of Ground Zero in New York City. Citizens and government officials threw a fit, and it ignited so much yelling and screaming that President Obama got involved. As of now, church members are willing to compromise on the site of their new mosque, and the city of New York is trying to work with them on a suitable area, so the flaming story is slowly fading. It was successful in reminding folks of our view on the subject of tolerance, and in some cases ignorance, for other religions. I name it one of the biggest stories of the summer due to the amount of heat it stirs in the press, and the general public.

  47. I think the big media story of the 2010 summer was the coverage on the 2010 world cup. World cup was advertised through internet, TV advertisements, newspaper, and through the radio. It was also viewed by about 4.9 million viewers in the US.

  48. In my opinion, one of the bigger stories of the 2010 summer was the death of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray. Paul Gray was known as a modern day Rockstar, and was thought of by many as the heart and soul of the band Slipknot. His death, shortly following that of Metal God Ronnie James Dio, marked another great blow to Heavy Metal, Rock, and the music industry as a whole. Like the greatest and truest of Rockstars, Paul Gray was found in a hotel room dead from a drug overdose; even after his fellow bandmates had kicked their habits and gone clean, Gray continued to embody the Rockstar personna. Just one more casualty of the music industry, Paul Gray rode the tiger until the end and died a trooper’s death. The future of Slipknot is unknown at this time as the remaining eight members have not commented one way or another on the future of the band.

  49. I feel like the big story of the summer was definitely the oil spill in the gulf and what they are doing to help fix the problem. It almost feels like the whole myth that the world is going to end in 2012 is coming true! It started with the attacks on 9/11, followed up with the tsunami in 2004, then came Hurricane Katrina, and now there are 56 million gallons of oil that have spilled in to the gulf coast… WOW are we the target or what?!?!

  50. I think the big story of the summer was the divorce of Tiger Woods to his wife. This was huge because the popularity of golf within a media setting rose dramatically and viewers, fans, even followers of Tiger Woods recieved one of the biggest shocks of their lives. It’s arguable that, for this day and age, Tiger Woods is the best golfer. This scandal arose questions such as, “Should professional athletes recieve the permission of not only society but of his loved ones to break promises to people JUST BECAUSE he’s famous?” The questions and speculations encompassed the issue, sending the popularity and sport of golf into a dissaray of media cameras fighting to get on the putting green and angered, resentful fans turning elsewhere for entertainment.

  51. The big media story for summer 2010 to me was with the entertainment industry and the success of the released movies at the box office and the new eminem cd that was released. From Toy Story 3 grossing $404,033,760 to Inception bringing in 600 million dollars the Twighlight Saga: Eclipse domestically grossing $297,292,615 resulting in the newly released and very popular spoof of Vampire’s Suck. In addition to the box office success this summer, Eminem released his newest cd Recovery selling over 700,000 copies since June 18th and his his sixth straight cd to debut on the Billboard charts at number one. I mean tons of people love his new music of even all generations, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

  52. The big media story of the summer to me was the oil spill on the gulf coast. Every time I see the commercials of all the animals who died from it living in the oil who were covered in the mess makes me strongly dislike the government more and more. this kind of stuff should not happen.

  53. I think that the big media story was the mother killing her two children in South Carolina, by strapping there bodies into their car seat and then letting the car drive into the river. I personally feel like if you can’t handle the responsibility of children you shouldn’t have them. Don’t make them suffer because your too lazy to perform your motherly dudies. Everytime I hear about terrible stories like this it makes me said because these children didn’t ask to be put in this worl who are you as a mother to take them out.
